Alex Tata, AMFT, APCC

Hi, I’m Alex! I’m a Certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor with a B.A. in Psychology from Sacramento State and an M.A. in Clinical Counseling from the University of San Francisco. I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) and an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) being supervised at Family Matters by Anneli Richards. I am passionate about working with children and families, particularly those navigating the complex challenges that substance use creates within family systems.
My career began primarily in residential treatment programs and correctional facilities, where I worked with adults in recovery. Over the years, I’ve learned that substance use impacts the whole family system—and that supporting children and families through those challenges is just as important as helping the individual in recovery. This understanding has shaped my commitment to helping families heal together.
I truly love working with children. Before becoming a therapist, I taught swim lessons, worked as a substitute teacher, and provided ABA therapy for kids on the autism spectrum. I naturally integrate art, play, and storytelling into my sessions, helping kids express themselves in ways that feel safe, natural, and fun. Children have an incredible capacity for resilience, and I feel honored to witness and support their growth and healing.
I am EMDR-trained and use a blend of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), tailoring each session to the unique needs of the person sitting across from me. Whether I’m working with a child processing difficult emotions, an adult in recovery, or a couple rebuilding trust, my approach is warm, empathetic, and evidence-based. I meet every client with curiosity and care while grounding our work in methods that really help.
At the heart of my work is a passion for helping clients discover their self-worth, encouraging self-compassion, and highlighting their inherent strengths. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where children feel seen, heard, and empowered to grow, where families can heal and reconnect, and where individuals can find their path to wellness.
In addition to working with children and families, I also work with adults and couples, particularly those navigating substance use recovery, trauma, and relationship challenges. My experience in residential treatment settings has given me valuable insight into supporting individuals through complex recovery processes and helping partners rebuild healthy connections.
If you are looking for support for your child, your family, or yourself, I would love the opportunity to work with you on this journey toward healing and growth.
